What's New Jan 30th 2003:
********ATTN
BONNIE HAMMER*********
Date: 01/30/2003
From: Raymar3d
This is my response to you. (see
TV GUIDE ARTICLE)
"Dear TV Guide management,
Please post this letter. It is a matter of grave importance to fandom
of a beloved show. You gave Bonnie Hammer her time, please return
the favor for the fans of the original she chooses to mock.
Bonnie Hammer is dead wrong about Battlestar Galactica. The original
show tops the new one a thousandfold. I've read the script. I have
posted an online review of it, as have others. The fans are outraged
at the blatant changes made to what was once a family show, which
in this incarnation will be ripped of any nobility or sense of family
in favor of cheap demographics, and explicit sexual scenes that
will definitely rule out children watching this show, which was
a show for everyone originally, adults and children alike.
I'd invite anyone interested in knowing more to visit scifi channel's
very own Battlestar Galactica forum to see the fan's reactions for
themselves, and to learn why we are fighting this farce. Battlestar
Galactica was one of the big three scifi shows in its day, right
up there with Star Trek and Star Wars, but it died a premature death
it didn't deserve, just as it opened up many new storylines that
still resonate among fans today.
Often labelled as a cheap ripoff of Star Wars by its critics, these
people never bothered to really watch it. It explored ancient mysteries
of lost civilizations, perhaps the origins of Atlantis and other
myths of our ancient history, and put them into a scifi atmosphere
of survival against overwhelming odds. That is a good story, and
it's barely been tapped.
The fans were touched by something important.
Integrity.
That's what the original show had that is missing in the remake
script.
What is needed and wanted, is a continuation with the original actors
and a new generation of warriors born in space. I'm betting there
are a lot of people with fond memories of that show (pre-Galactica
1980) that would love to see Apollo and Starbuck cruising the galaxy
again, played by Richard Hatch and Dirk Benedict.
Instead, scifi wants to give Starbuck a sex change and turn several
other characters into unlikable self-centered whiny babies or liars.
The most interesting character in the remake is Baltar, the traitor
from the original series. Sad that the evil person becomes the most
likeable, isn't it?
Fans out there, do your homework. Battlestar Galactica is about
to be destroyed forever with this "reinvention". There were 16,000
signatures on a petition for a continuation with the original cast.
YOU the people who liked that show are out there, and you can help!
Visit www.battlestargalactica.com to learn about the campaign to
return the original cast to action once again.
Sincerely,
Kenneth Thomson Jr."
Ms Hammer,
I do not understand your hatred. You hate fans so much you'd rather
destroy your own chance for success than to listen to reason. I
would invite you to reconsider your plans. There is still time.
I'm not trying to fight you. I'm appealing to reason here. Bury
the hatchet now, save your audience. Save your network. You keep
dissing your fans, they will leave you no ratings at all. Just common
sense.
And, another thing. If you think that by dissing the original to
promote your rehash is good politics, you should think again.
Sincerely,
Kenneth Thomson Jr.
Jan 26th 2003:
Greetings, fellow warriors!
It's been awhile since I updated this page, so
in a nutshell, here's the latest scoop:
Ron
Moore is considering the possiblity of doing a prequel. There is
nothing definite, and the rumors on the scifi board have no bearing
in this. The person called "Treklord" is not known to
Ron Moore, nor is "MooreMan" according to Ron Moore himself,
who I spoke to the other day.
There is no word on a continuation from the Ron Moore front, straight
from the horse's mouth.
On another note, I've finally posted the images of the Galactica's
bridge that I created for the ill-fated Battlestar
Galactica Technical Journal! For all the info on the Technical
Journal's history and what happened to it, there are links below.
To get a good look at the bridge I created for it, click
here to get to the TJ gallery!
Sincerely,
Ken Thomson

Archived news from 2001
News
from the time while Tom DeSanto and Bryan Singer were at the helm
of the BSG project is listed below.... Interestingly enough, what
Richard Hatch had to say about the Tom DeSanto project still applies
to the current Ron Moore project. It should be noted that before
Tom DeSanto had the rug pulled out from under him, it was clear
he wanted to do a continuation with the original cast, and my hat
goes off to him. Too bad he didn't get the gig.....
An Open Letter from Richard
Hatch (aka: Captain Apollo!) to the fans of Battlestar
Galactica:
Richard
has been tentative about discussing this, but decided it needed
to be shared with the public.
"Hi everyone,
I just thought that I would share a few
thoughts and update all of you on what's going on with myself and
Battlestar Galactica. It's been a relatively quiet time after all
the dramatic news concerning the new proposed Battlestar Galactica
series. I have read a few articles from Bryan Singer and have heard
little bits of heresay from various parties. However, the pipeline
for breaking news seems to have been turned off for the time being.
It seems to me that if we are not hearing anything, then either
there is nothing to report -- or they don't want us to know what's
going on.
After such a strong negative response from the
fans concerning the direction the studios originally wanted to take
Battlestar Galactica in, I would have to think that they must have
realized that if they were going to follow their own agenda, they
better do it in secret. Nobody wants to be second guessed and I'm
sure that they think that they know better than the fans what
direction the show should go in. They talk about honoring the
original show, but everything I hear tells me that they have no real
intention of following through on that promise other than in a token
way, which is how the studios always try to appease the fans and at
the same time take advantage of the marketing value of using a few
characters from the original series.
Who knows, maybe they will come up with a great
show and blow everybody away with their creative vision for
Battlestar Galactica, maybe they won't. No matter what happens, I
personally would like to see Battlestar succeed because Its a great
epic story with a lot of heart, and it deserves a real chance to
fly. My fear is, if Battlestar Galactica doesn't succeed, they will
blame Battlestar itself and not the creative vision behind it. The
studios will just say that if Bryan Singer and Tom DeSanto can't
make Battlestar Galactica successful than nobody can. I still
believe that the studios don't understand what is special about
Battlestar nor do they understand the vast and wide ranging fanbase
that supports it. They are more excited about having Bryan Singer
and Tom DeSanto on board than in the show itself. I'm excited about
them too, they're very talented young guys who can bring a lot to
the table but the fact that nobody really believes in the show
except maybe Tom and Bryan tells me that what the studios really
want is a new show. It might have the Battlestar Galactica name
which they can use for relaunching it, but essentially they're
hoping Bryan and Tom will come up with an exciting new concept,
which, while borrowing from Battlestar Galactica, will in reality be
a completely different animal.
If one doesn't understand what is special about
a show or what made it successful in the first place, then how can
one ever build upon it? The fact is: The studios don't perceive
Battlestar Galactica as having been successful. Period. So they
believe they have to change it drastically to have any chance of
succeeding. They also seem more concerned with building a new
audience than pleasing the existing fanbase. What I don't
understand is, isn't the existing fanbase (which spans generations)
the one that is going to make a classic like Battlestar successful?
Aren't they the ones that have always made any sci-fi show
successful? Why would anyone risk losing the majority of your fans
just to gain a few new converts?
Again it seems that they still don't
understand that the core audience for a classic like Battlestar is
the one that already exists, and that they're the group they have to
please if they have any hope of buying enough time to bond the
audience to their new characters and storylines.
Moving on, I want to address an issue that
really bothers me. They keep doing polls to get audience feedback
and they always give the option of supporting me or the new team, or
a new cast or the old cast. I've never seen them ask if the people
would like to see the original cast teamed up with new characters.
They never seem to address the idea of a combination of old and new.
I'm sure the majority of people would like to come home to the show
they have always loved but at the same time meet new characters and
storylines along with an updated look to the show.
I also want to make the point that it's not
about Richard Hatch being in a new show. I believe that Battlestar
Galactica is not Battlestar Galactica without all the core
characters that made up the original show. I have always fought to
bring everyone back. I believe in Tigh, Boomer, Starbuck, Sheba,
Cassiopeia and many other actors who made the show special. Every
ounce of my energy has been used to build a case for them and also
creating a bridge between the past and the future. This will
unite the fanbase and generate the momentum needed to convince the
studios and the world that Battlestar Galactica has always been
successful and only needs a real and well thought out first chance
to do what it was capable of doing twenty years ago.
I believe there is room to serve the
commercial, artistic and fan agenda's without losing the integrity
of the show. I also believe the fans know more about Galactica
than anyone. We all have to learn to listen more and talk
less. That's certainly is my agenda and I am working very hard to
learn it. Hopefully the studios will too. In the meantime I'm not
holding my breath. If they had any intention of using the original
stars in any significant way they would have said so by now. What a
PR statement that would have been. I don't know about you but when I
saw the original stars of Star Trek back on the screen I cheered
along with millions of other fans. The same with Star Wars. That's
what was missing from Star Wars: Episode One.
We all have to move on in our lives. I know
only one thing: I've spent too much time doing things I don't care
about or believe in. I want to be part of a team and a vision I can
be proud of. And sometimes it seems that the only way to accomplish
that is to go out there and create it. I've met so many talented and
underused artists and performers in our industry who are burnt out
from sacrificing their abilities at the feet of companies that don't
care about the quality of their product, only their short term
profits. We get lots of sizzle but very little steak. That why I'm
building my company to create cutting edge, heart centered
entertainment. I'm making lots of mistakes, falling down, failing
and making a fool of myself. But I'm learning and growing. The
trailer for my new sci-fi show, The Great War of Magellan, is almost
completed and I hope to share it with you soon. My behind the scenes
making of the trailer is finished and we have been playing it at
conventions.
I'll be all over the world this year again
promoting the third book of the Battlestar Galactica trilogy
("Resurrection"), in addition The Great War of Magellan, and, of
course, Battlestar itself. I'll always believe and support this
wonderful show regardless of what happens. I'm a fan just like the
rest of you and I'm also hungry for better and more exciting sci-fi
programing. My God, there are so many wonderful books and stories
just waiting to be produced!
In regard to the upcoming third Battlestar
Galactica book, "Resurrection," I have been struggling with sharing
what a difficult journey it has been finally getting this book out.
After book two ("Warhawk") was completed, Byron Preiss (the
publisher) closed down his company and reformed under a new name.
The third Battlestar Galactica book was put on hold and we were all
frustrated about not being able to complete our Battlestar Galactica
book trilogy in a timely manner.
By the time Byron came back to me with a book
proposal, over two years had passed. Unfortunately, they didn't seem
interested in completing the trilogy. They reluctantly gave us a
chapter to wrap up the original story before starting fresh with a
new story concept. I fought to complete the third book of the
trilogy first and finally after many months of negotiations they
agreed. I still found myself waiting for months to see a contract.
By the time I received one, there was very little time to write the
story. I immediately dug in and wrote a 40 page treatment which I
sent to my new co-writer, Stan Timmons. We worked feverishly on it.
While we were still working on the second draft of the book, we were
asked to turn in the rough first draft for Universal's approval. We
were told that we still had time to complete all our rewrites. We
tried to contact our publisher with the rewrites, but we continued
to wait for weeks for a reply.
During that time, we completed a second and
third draft of the book which we were waiting to turn in. We were
finally told, much to our surprise, that they had printed the first
draft, due to time constraints. Stan and I were extremely
disappointed and felt betrayed as we had been promised the
opportunity to complete our rewrites.
I'm still proud of the story and the book, but
feel a little sad and angry that we were not able to refine and
fully develop all the story and character elements that make a book
special. Hopefully we will be permitted to turn in the final draft
for the paperback edition. I'm sure you will still enjoy the book as
this third story is part of what I was saving for my series
proposal, "The Second Coming." I decided that maybe this would be my
last opportunity to share part of my vision for where I would like
to take the series. It seems that Universal in the past has not
cared that much about creating quality Battlestar Galactica
products. Hopefully now that a new series is in development, that
attitude will change and we can look forward to a renewed interest
in creating top notch Battlestar Galactica products. I'm sure the
new caretakers for Battlestar Galactica, Tom DeSanto and Bryan
Singer, will ensure that happens. By the way if your still
interested in getting the paperback version of "Warhawk," then let
Bryan Preiss know. Maybe they will get the message and finally print
enough books to serve the demand.
In closing, just remember it's not about me,
Universal, Tom or Bryan, it's about you and what you want.
Communicate! Communicate! Communicate! Your power lies in letting
them know what you think. The ball is in your hands now as it should
be. They're not interested in what I think but what you, their
audience thinks. Take care until next time. I look forward to seeing
and hearing from all of you again this year. Thanks for
listening.
Sincerely,
Thank you Richard, for all your fighting for
the fans, and for the Galactica!
I personally want to add that I still believe
that the original cast has a good chance, but I agree that the lack
of annoucements on casting means one of two things: No decision has
been made. Or perhaps another decision, one that the fans will not
like, has been made. It's a logical inference, considering the
previous news about a Battlestar Galactica series, without even the
Galactica or the cylons, was shot down immediately, amidst a huge
wave of ridicule by the fans, both hard core and casual alike. I
doubt they'd want a repeat of that, or a repeat of Galactica 1980,
either.
Let's hope for the best, and remember that
Bryan Singer and Tom DeSanto did a great job of listening to the
fans with X-Men, and bank on that.
But I urge you all to speak now, or forever
hold your peace.
As for what I'd like to see in the new show,
read my editorial below. It still stands.

Editorial from April 18th 2001:
An Editorial / Wishlist for the new
Battlestar Galactica Series, by Kenneth Thomson Jr. I posted this on
scifi channel's online forum, and modified it for reprinting
here.
"Date: 4/18/2001
From: Raymar3d (Ken Thomson Jr.)
I love this! Okay, now, sitting back at the computer,
pondering.... What do I want to see in the new
show?
#1: The original cast and designs!!!!!! Where are
they now? What has become of them? This is CRUCIAL in my opinion to
the success of ANY continuation of the original series. We cared
about these people, and that's why Galactica 1980 failed miserably.
Lorne Greene couldn't carry the show without Apollo and Starbuck,
who were the heart of the original. They were the heart, and their
friends were a huge part of their lives, so they should be there
too. Sheba, Cassie, Athena, Boomer, Boxey (or Troy, if you prefer)
and Tigh are all big characters in the lives of the original stars
of the show. It's logical that they'd be the "parents" of a new
generation, which is where the new cast should come in, leading to
number 2....
#2: New characters to bridge the old to the new, as a new
generation born in space, dealing with only the 'concept' of what
the colonies must have been like, and what kind of world they had to
grow up in, and their dreams for a new world to raise their children
in. Characters of all generations working together for mutual
survival. No one put out to pasture out of predjudice. If the
original cast gets put out to pasture, it should be done in a way
that grows the character into a new, useful role that benefits from
their experience and gives them a crucial purpose.
#3: The cylons should be out there. Just as
they were, (Lucifer's IL series) but continuing to upgrade their
technology, specifically to hunt renegade humans, which means new
cylons, too. I can imagine a scene of an upgrade factory where old
centurians are on some kind of assembly line, and go through an
upgrade. We wouldn't see this, necessarily, but it could be alluded
to. I want to see their origin explored in depth, and see if any of
the original reptilian creators of the machine cylons have survived
the millennia, and if so, have they rebuilt a civilization? What
purpose would they have now, revenge against their creations, or
just survival? Are they renegades like the humans? Could they become
allies, or would they be enemies if they exist? How does Count Iblis
tie in to this equation?
#4: The Battlestar Pegasus. Cain if possible. And, if
there are any other straggler survivors out there, it could be
interesting as well. I'd like to tie-up all the loose ends from the
old show over the course of the series, so that when it moves
forward, we don't have a sense of missing something important, and
feel the reward of having those loose-ends tied that we were
deprived of with the cheap imitation Galactica 1980 and the end of
Battlestar. I'd like to see Robert
Conrad, the esteemed ORIGINAL James West, and Pappy Boyington
from "Baa Baa Black Sheep" take over for Lloyd Bridges as
Cain. He looks about the right age to take over in the role,
and he's got the PRESENCE and credibility to be
Cain, if we see the character again. All you have to do is see him
as Black Sheep squadron commander to know he's got the fighter pilot
experience, and he's got tons of charisma, like Lloyd Bridges had.
Plus, he's got a little Kirk in him too. (Lloyd Bridges was almost
cast as Kirk, but didn't want to get typecast in a science fiction
role.... Interesting, huh? What do you guys think? P.S. "I dare you
to knock it off!")
#5: New alien races to encounter, that are truly alien, not
just forehead bump of the week, and same-old hum-drum present day
issues rehashed again and again by them. I want more
creatures like Ovions, and other really dangerous, non-technological
xenomorphs like 'Alien' and 'species', etc. The occasional helpful
alien race who might ally with the humans against the cylons or
other common threats. NO PRIME DIRECTIVE. No politically correct
stuff, either. I want a show with some guts. Characters should have
CONFLICT with one another, even if they are best friends, family, or
whatever. Conflict is LIFE. Everyone nicey nicey to each other is
BORING, which is why Star Trek :TNG started out putting me to sleep.
It rehashed original plots in a cheapened way. DON'T do this! NO Kid
geniuses, please! Let kids be kids if you have them. The teenagers
should be thinking about teenage things, like meeting girls (or
boys), but have to hit the simulators to practice dogfighting
instead, if you catch my drift. :) Commaraderie, partying,
punctuated by sorrow.
#6a: Continue the search for earth. I'd like
to see them having passed the earth by in "Hand of God" and
continued on toward deep space, thinking they are still on course,
trying to avoid the cylons. Perhaps Apollo 13 was damaged by debris
from the destroyed Baseship.... Then eventually realizing that
mistake and returning to find earth subjugated by cylons....
(MAYBE). Just one possible idea. Eventually find earth. But, that
shouldn't be the sole quest.
#6b: IF they've found earth, then they should build a new
fleet of warships to defend her, possibly
using Area 51 as a construction facility for earth-based work, and
the dark side of the moon for space-based construction. I'd also
like to see them working with the governments of several nations to
achieve this, if they should go this route.
#6c: If the colonials are recieving transmissions from earth,
the cylons would be too. Don't neglect this aspect. Maybe the
Galactica finds Earth in the midst of a cylon attack.... Or they
find the smoking ruin of the planet.... But, wouldn't it be better
to make the last act of this series the defeat of the cylons? Not
the defeat of mankind?
#7: Keep the spirituality of the original show. Count
Iblis is an important character that should definitely continue on,
as well as the beings from the ship of lights. But we should stay
away from Q-like beings, IMHO. That gets tiresome.
#8: Natural phenomena in space, such as wormholes and black
holes being the sole means of time travel. Unless
they come across ancient technology such as the "Guardian of
Forever" in Star Trek, there should be no artificial time travel
possible. That was the lamest thing about Galactica 1980, IMHO.
#9: Better definition of terminology, and technology, while
still being true to what has gone on before. No
Technobabble to solve problems in the last five minutes of a show.
Instead, the characters solve the problems using their heads, in a
way that the audience can also come up with if they're clever
enough. That involves the audience, sort of like a whodunnit
mystery. You want the audience to feel involved, if it's to be
successful. Of course surprise is great, but don't just invent
something out of thin air at the end of a show to solve the problem
at hand. Lead up to a satisfying conclusion. Don't write a two-part
story without planning the second part out in it's entirety, or
you'll face the dreaded "The first part was great, but the second
part was lame" syndrome. Original BSG as the foundation for the
series Bible, Galactica 1980 as apocrypha. Tie-in some 'Chariots of
the Gods' kind of stuff, and no old west.
#10: Really mature, thoughtful writing, with lots of action,
lots of conflict, lots of speculative ideas, lots of mystery and
suspense. Don't water it down for the lowest common denominator
audience. Raise the bar with this one, and make a show
that everyone will find compelling. Make an effort to please the
fans of the old and also gain new fans. Don't lose the new fans in
too many tie-ins right away, start out with some really knock-down,
drag out fun and action. Spoon feed the tie-ins throughout the run
of the show. Use the Baltar footage Richard Hatch shot to tie-up the
loose end of Baltar's character with a send-off that has an
important role in a story, but isn't the center of the story. Keep
an open mind to doing things that no other show has done, by
respecting the old show and making it an asset to the new show, not
an "embarassment" as Star Trek's current creative team deem the
original Star Trek by paying lip-service to the fans and behind
closed doors mocking the original, to which they owe their jobs. I
don't mean that to sound too personal, but it's a way of keeping the
new team up to speed with the feelings of fandom. :)
Show's in good hands, I think!
Ken :) "

Dreamwatch #63 has so far the most comprehensive
article on the production of Richard's trailer available, and has
some very high resolution images from the production of
"Battlestar Galactica: The Second Coming." A MUST HAVE
if you are interested in seeing production
information. The only complaint I had about it was that
Dreamwatch cut our names off the graphics. I did get
mentioned by first name, but Mike McAdams got no credit for all
those shots that are everywhere in the issue that he did. Oh
well! Welcome to Hollywood!

We were hoping for better credits
in the CINEFANTASTIQUE article that finally got published.
Unfortunately, it didn't happen. You can pick up a copy off the
shelves currently, or view the article by visiting the Battlestar
Galactica Fan Club Photo Gallery site. After doing an interview
lasting a half an hour, it was disappointing to have no mention,
once again. To top it off, there were no cgi images in the article,
despite the fact that we included them for publication, and instead
of images from "Battlestar Galactica: The Second
Coming", they actually included an image from "Black Scorpion" and
tried to pass it off as coming from the trailer!

Battlestar Galactica novels, by Richard
Hatch can be found and purchased by clicking the images below. I
highly recommend these novels! If you want to know what "Battlestar Galactica:
The Second Coming" is all about, you can get a good idea
from reading these highly entertaining novels!

"Armaggeddon" sets the
stage for the return of the story, twenty yahrens after the
Battlestar Galactica Finale Episode "Hand of God" and puts the
extremely unpopular Galactica
1980 TV series into the category of a "bad dream." It
also features the return of Count Iblis, and the struggle for power
in the fleet after the death of Commander Adama. It also features
the debut of the new Scarlett Viper and the Human Chip
Cylons.
For me, this novel was the reason I contacted Richard
Hatch to pitch an animated series revival for Battlestar Galactica.
But when I met him, he'd already shot 45 minutes of live footage for
his trailer, and invited me onboard to create 3d animated cylons for
key sequences in the trailer! How could I pass that up?
"Warhawk" features
the long-awaited return of the Legendary Commander Cain, and the
Battlestar Pegasus, and a new threat, the Chitain, who could be more
lethal than the cylons!
This novel continues the story begun
in Armaggeddon, and continues to develop the new generation
of warriors, and further develop the original heroes.
All is not as it seems, and some characters act
a little strange, but there is more here than meets the eye....
You'll just have to wait for the third novel, coming
soon!
